Police: below-inflation pay rise Brown (through his inept mouthpiece, Alistair Darling) is pleading poverty however - demanding that the English and Welsh police take an under-inflation pay rise (Scottish police get the full settlement, but that's another story entirely), and is ever so equitably demanding that MPs also take a staged pay increase which works out below inflation. Of course, this is to "keep inflation under control", rather than a "salary cut in real-terms", as he would have described it if he were the opposition. This will save the Exchequer some £30m - perhaps Brown should cut his state-aid to India by that £30m and appease the police. £795m is still a tidy sum, after all. Physics research suffers Meanwhile, Physics funding has recently been "shaken up", resulting in some £80m under funding in core research activities. Physics research might not sound very useful, on the face of it, but it is absolutely critical in searching for the cure for cancer, looking for alternative energy sources to coal and oil, amongst others. So, maybe the Chancellor could free up £80m from his Indian gift. £715m is still very generous, after all. Family businesses to pay for Indian bribe Brown is also smarting from recently losing a key case in the House of Lords - HMRC vs. Arctic Systems (or, to paraphrase: The Government vs. Family Run Businesses). All sorts of figures were bandied about at the trial by the Government - most of them factually inaccurate at best - but the Government believes that it can extort a further £200m from family-run businesses (a future article will cover this in full). If Brown is feeling the pinch this badly, perhaps he could simply keep back £200m of the money he plans to give to India, instead of crippling some of the UK's most creative people. £515m is still a lot of money to give away on a whim. With so many funding problems within the UK, Gordon Brown's transparent attempt to bribe India is not only ill-judged, but ultimately futile. Lining up the Police, chopping vital physics research, and raiding the already stressed piggy banks of struggling family businesses to pay for this state aid simply beggars belief. |

In a surprising announcement, Gordon Brown has decided to hand some £825m to India, which currently stands in 4th place in World Economy sizes, and is posting over 8% growth per annum. Compare this to the UK's more sedate growth of around 2.5% - almost all of which is swallowed up by Gordon Brown's Government in increased taxes.
