Sleaze and Corruption

New Labour were elected in 1997 on a "no sleaze" ticket. They promised to be "whiter than white", and fresh-faced Prime Minister Tony Blair promised that any Labour MP who was caught with his/her hands in the biscuit barrel, or trousers down, or generally being incompetent, would be fired. Did this happen? Well, you can probably guess, but read on...

    In recent years, MPs have become known for hoovering out as much cash from the humble British taxpayer as is possible. Pigs feeding at a trough can barely hold a candle to the way MPs stuff fivers into their pockets. This section addresses some of the more blatant cash-grabbing tactics; and is somewhat unusual in that it doesn't exclusively target New Labour MPs - although they are some of the most hypocritical of our cash-trousering representatives.

    A key plank of Labour's victorious 1997 election campaign was the eradication of "sleaze", which the Tories had become mired in. 10 years later, and New Labour are embroiled in a criminal investigation into allegations of selling knighthoods and peerages.
